Artist Statement
Birds have dominated my paintings for some time, I now class myself as a bird painter. The marabou stork was my first muse - and I find myself going back to this bird a lot. I am attracted to their evil nature and their sheer size. Their vertical stance immediately lends an anthropomorphic quality to their presence, whilst there is a noticeable amount of dinosaur in them.
I paint all sorts of birds, but am always a fan of birds with a bad reputation, or ones that some may find boring, they’re never boring, just perhaps too common or dull for some. All birds possess the same commonality though - a never-ending wit, nerve, and need for survival. You have to love them for that - the best and worst bits of us.
I paint in acrylic on large canvases, sometimes solitary birds, or sometimes a mixture of birds that wouldn’t meet each other in nature. I like a plain background, taking the bird out of its habitat to give it a real portrait feeling.
